CRASH SAFETY RESEARCH is a specialist consultancy dedicated to assisting manufacturers and suppliers in all areas of child car seat (child safety restraint) projects.
​We can provide support ranging from total project control to partial collaboration at any stage from concept, research, design and development through to testing, final certification and manufacture. We can also provide guidance and assistance with manufacturing and quality processes, internal and supplier controls plus support for any ongoing batch testing.

Based near Melbourne, Australia, the primary range of expertise is design, development, testing and certification of child restraint systems to AS1754 for Australia & NZ, but also have extensive knowledge & experience in products to FMVSS-213, ECE-R44 & ECE-R129.
​Other areas of expertise include the design and homologation of Nursery products, particularly for standard and mandatory requirements in Australia. Product categories include; Strollers, High chairs, Baby walkers, Cots, Safety gates & Accessories.

Design and Homologation Services
Taking your products to the next level by providing professional advice to clients on how to achieve compliance. The services available are listed below:-
PRODUCT REVIEWS: Full 360 degree reviews of existing products or new designs to evaluate their compatibility to AS1754 or other standards. A full cost analysis of the approval process can also be conducted to help plan your program budgets. Can also conduct product reviews on existing products to assess their conformance to supplier quality systems and intended design criteria.
DESIGN & DESIGN REVIEWS: Provide direction for manufacturers own designers on what to create, change, modify or replace. We can arrange and manage partial or full design services using consultancy partners. Crash Safety Research is an associate of JMDA UK for top quality design.
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT: We can provide complete or partial program management (as required) for all new designs and/or product updates to ensure full compliance throughout the products life-cycle. We provide expert direction using 'Lean Engineering' and VA/VE principles to keep the product simple and cost effective, and can conduct or assist with any FMEA and DFMA studies.

TESTING: Provide testing management and on-site supervision for any concept, R&D crash testing programs and arrange any materials testing as required (eg. flammability, toxicity, labels durability, sharp edges & projections, etc).
HOMOLOGATION: Manage and provide on-site supervision for compliance testing programs conducted at approved test laboratories and conduct all relevant paperwork for product approvals from certification applications through to the final close-out report stages.
MANUFACTURING SITE APPROVAL: Advise and/or assist with companies overseas manufacturing sites on production requirements and QA levels required to achieve supplier approval for Australian market.
CONSUMER TESTING: Child restraints in the Australian market are subject to periodic consumer reviews which are widely used by many customers as a buyers guide. We can assess products to the latest protocols and examine its potential performance in the consumer review system (CREP). This includes assessment on both crash performance and design issues as well as instructional information for 'ease of use' criteria.
About CSR
Crash Safety Research is owned and run by a child restraint industry expert with over 36 years' experience, and is a participating member of the CS-085 Standards committee (Australian Child Restraint Standard AS/NZS:1754 and related standards).
Originally trained and educated in the Aerospace industry, moved into child restraint development for Britax Europe in 1988 and has been in the child safety and nursery industry ever since. Relocating to Britax Australia in 2001 he has continued to work in the Australian child restraint industry.
Having been heavily involved in developing new products and technologies for making travel safer for children and has been involved in a number of products that won Australian Design Awards. Now dealing in a more global aspect of child safety and developing products for international markets as well as for Australia and was directly involved in the design and development of the Maxi Cosi Pria which also won an Australian Design Award in 2023.

Specialising in Design expertise, product Development, Testing and Certification Procedures, FMEA's, Production Engineering Quality Control, and Program Management, with a deep-seated quality driven philosophy derived from my Aerospace design and tooling background. Crash Safety Research is an Associate member of JMDA UK, who are a world leading design agency for child restraint systems, and our primary source for all CAD design and development.
Crash Safety Research is a recognized authority in working with Australian, European and American standards for Child Restraint Homologation and also your company's manufacturing approval procedures for the supply of child restraints into Australia.
We can help with any area of design, development, testing and manufacture to AS/NZS 1754, FMVSS 213 and ECE-R129 and can provide technical direction & project management, when and where needed.
